Research activities using OPNET:

ICT220 Telecommunications and Networks

IT Guru is used in this course to simulate wireless and web-based business solutions, such as client/server hardware and software together with front and back end technologies for business scenarios to gain an enhanced appreciation of concepts, issues, protocols, security and control issues associated with information communication technology (ICT) networks. Students gain hands-on experience in decision making, designing, building, testing, trouble-shooting, problem solving and maintaining a computer network using IT Guru before implementing the configuration on a live network. In this way, students gain an understanding of the interconnection of theory and practice for telecommunications and business networks.

Research Activities

Use IT Guru to investigate the technical aspects to establish a WiMAX network on Fraser Island for scientific, commercial and general public access.

Scientific

Improved opportunities for remote scientific research by enabling wireless monitoring devices to stream data, audio and video information to a server located at Dilli Village for transmission via satellite to centres of research across the world.

Commercial

Utilise the WiMAX 802.16 IEEE standard for commercial broadband applications for tourist operators, tourist destinations, allocation of camping permits and the payment of fees, VoIP, mobile telephone, safety warnings, Internet access and the use of real-time interpretative devices for tourist vehicles utilising GPS tracking and monitoring.

Public

Utilise the WiMAX 802.16 IEEE standard for commercial broadband applications for tourist operators, tourist destinations, allocation of camping permits and the payment of fees, VoIP, mobile telephone, safety warnings, Internet access and the use of real-time interpretative devices for tourist vehicles utilising GPS tracking and monitoring.
